Sometimes artists have to look at other art to understand why they make what they make. For me, portraits are the most important part of my paintings and even of my other work, the embroideries for example. This painting made by Charley Toorop shows us the artist herself and her family. I really love the work of Charley Toorop because the people she paints stare right at you with such an intense gaze. It's very hard to ignore them and look away. Every time I'm at the Rotterdam museum Boijmans van Beuningen I visit the room with her painting depicting her family and friends. To be continued tomorrow.
