Yesterday I showed you the painting of his mother, Charley Toorop. In the museum of Boijmans van Beuningen in Rotterdam there is this self-portrait of her son, Edgar Fernhout. He looks at us with the same intensity we already know from the portraits of his mother. Though his use of lines and colours is very different and more modest and natural. I like standing in front of this painting and watch. Just watch. Sometimes I dream he could come off of the painting and talk to me. I'd certainly like to know what he is thinking. Why has he painted himself like this? Why those colours? I like to think he was an interesting man. My love for portraits will not decrease If I will be coming across more portraits in museums. Time for another visit to an unknown (to me at least ) museum like de Fundatie in Zwolle. Just planning to go. I will keep you informed.
